Arrangements to confirm European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) at John Blow Primary School

To comply with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) as a school, we have implemented the following features:

1. Anti-Discrimination Policies (see policies and Equality Statement 2024)

  • ECHR Articles 14 and Protocol 12: Protect individuals from discrimination. Your policies should ensure that students, staff, and parents are treated fairly and equally, regardless of race, religion, gender, disability, or other protected characteristic.

  • What we do... all of our policies are inclusive with careful consideration for the Protected Characteristics.  For the 2024-2025 academic year, a focus on the characteristics forms the basis for staff CPD sessions (in collaboration with Leeds Trinity University) and assembly themes.

2. Right to Education

  • ECHR Protocol 1, Article 2: Guarantees the right to education. Ensure all students have access to education without unjustified exclusions or barriers.

  • What we do... inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do; we strive to ensure that discrimination is eliminated at John Blow Primary School.

3. Freedom of Expression and Respect for Private Life

  • ECHR Articles 8 and 10: Protect students’ right to respect for private life and freedom of expression.

  • What we do... mentoring groups provide all learners with a platform to build positive relationships with their peers and staff.

4. Freedom of Religion and Belief

  • ECHR Article 9: Grants freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.

  • What we do... our PRSE and RE curriculums provide opportunities for children to explore different values and beliefs and in equipping children with this knowledge, they are able to discuss and explore their opinions.

5. Protection from Inhuman or Degrading Treatment

  • ECHR Article 3: Prohibits torture or inhuman treatment.

  • What we do... through the use of picture books, we explore key Human Rights themes during PRSE lessons which have been mapped out across the school year through long-term planning.

6. Right to Fair Process in Disciplinary Matters

  • ECHR Article 6: The right to a fair trial implies students have a fair process in disciplinary actions.

  • What we do... a clear and concise Behaviour and Relationships Policy (and procedure document) ensures a consistent approach to managing behaviour at John Blow Primary School.

7. Staff Training and Awareness

  • What we do... a comprehensive CPD plan is in place to support the development of staff at John Blow Primary School.

By embedding these principles into the school’s operations, we have created a respectful and compliant environment that aligns with the ECHR.
